Wanted...IDEAS!

HELP NEEDED!

Ok, for all you ladies who do cake decorating I need some help! The other day was my son's birthday and  he wanted a soccer ball cake. So I set out on what became a disasterous adventure, but the outcome was not a soccer ball. Thankfully my little guy is sweet and understanding and he loved the cake anyway.
The outcome of the "soccer cake"
So here is what I need from ya'll...IDEAS. We have two more Birthdays rapidly approching, for two very sweet girls. Eryn wants a Princess cake, and Maryanna wants a Strawberry Shortcake cake! I have no idea where to start. So I would like some of your favorite cake decorating websites, and some of your own experiences. Please and Thank you!

I do special cakes for each of my kids' birthdays... and I have six kids with the oldest being 14 years old... so I've done my share of cakes! I usually google the shape I want til I've seen a few different pictures of other cakes - then I choose what I like about each one.
My favorite way to do a cake is to choose a picture from a coloring book and copy it. (coloring books have big, simple lines) I draw a grid (like tic-tac-toe) on the coloring page/picture and then lightly draw the same grid on the cake with a sharp knife. That helps with size distortion and placement of eyes, etc. That said, I avoid human faces if possible - they're hard! I did do a strawberry shortcake once though. I just did her head and hat, copied from a coloring book. I have a picture of my cake if you want it.
For the princess cake, http://familyfun.go.com/recipes/princess-castle-cake-686435/ has a simple castle cake that is fun to decorate. If you don't have ice cream cones, you could roll heavy paper into a cone shape. (a tip: if you put any frosting on the paper, wait until the last minute - it will soak in over time) My daughter loved this one. We had her dress up like a princess for her birthday dinner/cake. www.famiyfun.go.com has many simple ideas for cakes.
I’ve never commented on a blog before so I hope this goes through!

Masey, I made a princess cake for EmilĂa last year. I just baked the cake and then scooped out a spot to place the Barbie Doll. The I just iced and decorated the cake and doll to look like a dress.

Anna wanted a Strawberry Shortcake cake for her birthday so we used a SS pan. Anna actually iced and decorated it herself, so we didn't follow all the lines, etc... to make it look like a face.

When my kids tell me what they want I always google the cake. Some are so simple and look fantastic! I love the castle cakes with ice cream cones... I have a birthday girl who is considering that for her next birthday! It looks like fun to make and eat!

Thank you ladies for your feedback. I will look into them, and hopefully the next cake won't be a disaster! :)

I made my daughter a cake and used colored tootsie rolls and rolled them out to make petals etc. I am sure you could do the same with red and pink tootsie rolls to come up with something to embellish the strawberry shortcake theme.
